Microsoft office 2010 on my HP Mini 2140

I just installed Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview in my HP Mini and all I can say is it works flawlessly! :) So what's new? Basically, it has almost the same functionalities as the MS office 2007, but personally I think it runs faster and is more reliable. I've tried doing Worksheets in Excel earlier for about an hour and I never encountered any errors in spite of using a lot of macros. So far so good, I think Windows 7 and MS Office 2010 is a very promising tandem indeed.

Under the hood of the HP Mini Notebook computers is the Intel Atom --Intel's smallest processor, and built with the world's smallast transisters and made with the 45nm Hi-k Metal Gate tecnhology.
Basically, the Intel Atom was built for Netbooks to cover basic computing functionalities such as surfing the net, working on simple Microsoft documents, and photo & video viewing.

HP will soon launch the HP Mini 5101 PC, a slightly bigger notebook under the HP Mini series targeting a different set of buyers -- business professionals.

Looking at the specs, I guess this is the successor of the HP Mini 2140 series. :)

The new HP Mini is not your ordinary chic 110, 1000 series -- aside from the slightly bigger frame, it has a sleek aluminum and magnesium finish with a different 95% keyboard like the Apples and Vaios. The screen is still at 10.1" but with an option to go HD(1366 x 768) or stay at your normal Wide SVGA (1024 x 600). Also, unlike the previous Mini laptops, "clicking" also becomes more ergonomic, as the mouse buttons are now below the trackpad as HP finally considered the request of HP Mini users in the past.:)Battery starts at a 4-cell battery option and upgradable to 6-cell to add longer hours of mobile computing. Another nice to have upgrade was the 2.0 mega pixel camera which replaces the regular 1.3 mega pixel webcams of the 110 series.

The HP Mini 5101 starts selling this July 2009 at around US$449, not bad considering all the upgrades.

Globe Tattoo vs Smart Bro vs Sun Broadband?

Laptop prices keep on getting cheaper and cheaper, one of the effects of this phenomenon is the sudden increase in the demand for wireless broadband connectivity.

Currently we have 3 major players in the Philippines: Globe Tattoo, Smart Bro, and Sun Broadband.

WHICH ONE IS THE BEST? This is the million dollar question of all mobile internet users in the Philippines nowadays :)

Is cost a good measure? Not really. The cost of connection is not a factor since all the 3 networks are offering very comparable rates.

How about speed? All 3 providers are also offering HSDPA, 3G, EDGE, & GPRS connectivity.

So what's the best measure? It now all depends on the number of cell sites vs the number of users to ensure a more reliable surfing experience. :)

To understand which wireless mobile is the best, let me just give you this simple logic:
1. Given that Smart Bro is the pioneer on wireless broadband, they definitely have more subscribers/users, hence it has the biggest ratio of cell sites to users resulting to slower performance compared to Globe tatoo and Sun broadband. The only advantage is the fact that they have the most number of cell sites across the Philippines, and may have the widest coverage on very remote areas in the country.
2. Globe Tattoo broadband is, right now, growing in sales/subscribers given the aggressive marketing and youthful branding. Currently, connection is great on most cities in Metro Manila and has the second most number of cell sites in the Philippines. As of today, connection is tolerable, however given the aggressive advertising, it may somehow end up like the Smart Bro if no further upgrades will be done by Globe really soon
3. Sun Broadband has the least user base, and lowest ratio of cell sites to users. Currently offers the most reliable and fastest connection between the 2 other options. However, given the limited number of cell sites, it may not be able to reach remote areas in the Philippines.

So what's the verdict?
- Use Smart Bro when surfing on remote places in the Philippine
- Globe Tattoo is the neutral choice but definitely not the fastest. (Personally, I use Globe tatoo since I can easily use my Globe Post Paid line to add some load to it):)
- It's advisable to use Sun Broadband when you're not too mobile and just surf on coffee shops on key cities in Metro Manila and in the Philippines. If I don't have the convenience of having a Globe Post paid line to reload my Tattoo,I'll definitely go for Sun Broadband. :)

HP Mini 2140 Buy Cheap in the Philippines

I got my HP Mini 2140 for around P23,995 (approx US$480). However, I didn't pay in cash! I bought this netbook on installment @ P2,000 (approx $40) for the next 12 months. Not bad right? All you need is good credit card and you're off to bringing home your dream laptop. :)

PS. I bought mine in Villman Computers in Pioneer near Edsa, most of the computer shops in Metro Manila offer the same credit card deal.

For folks in the US and Canada, there's always Buy.com or Cost Co where you can find best deals. Even the refurbished ones may surprise you :)

Starbucks Summit Ridge Hotel Tagaytay Free Wifi

I'm sitting here right now at the new Starbucks Summit Ridge Mall in Tagaytay enjoying free WIFI. For those folks unfamiliar with this place, it's the new hotel and shopping arcade in front of Josephine's Tagaytay. The above photo was taken from my HP Mini 2140 webcam --it's a 1.3 megapixel webcam, and that explains the celphone camera quality). At the background is my wife taking her Lenovo Ideapad S10 for a spin. :)

There are 3 options to connect to the internet via Wifi in this place. The only free option is the Robinson's Mall router which covers about the whole shoppping arcade. The other 2 are Airborneaccess connections, and a secure WIFI connection from the new Summit Ridge hotel.

Overall connection is acceptable. I'm able to do facebook and blog at the same time. Obviously not as fast as your regular DSL connection at home, but definitely worth using with some expresso or frapuccino on the side. :) This place is a great alternative other Starbucks in Tagaytay beside Pancake house. :)

HP Mini 2140 Review : It's Mine! :)

Last May 2009, bought my brand new HP Mini 2140. :) Now I've never been more excited surfing the net from my bed, kitchen, bathroom, and of course wifi coffee shops. Got it for P23,995 (roughly $430) from Villman Computers in Robinson's Pioneer.

The HP Mini 2140 is indeed the best in its class when it comes to Mini notebooks. Others brand it as the first Business Mini Laptop in terms of overall performance and reliability.

For me HP will always be HP in terms of reliability and was a hands down choice compared to the Asus EEE PC and Acer Aspire netbooks

If only I saw the Acer Aspire One D250 first before I fell in love with my HP Mini 2140, this current blog could have had a different name . Apparently, the Aspire One D150 was the only competition back then with my HP Mini, hence it was a no brainer choice for me. :)

The Acer Aspire One D250 is available in Red, Blue, and Black glossy finish. SRP starts at around US$300 in the US. A bit cheaper than the HP Mini 2140, but definitely as powerfull! Cool huh? :)

The HP Mini 2140 HD has been in the blogs for about 2 months now. As of today, I haven't seen it in computer shops here in Metro Manila yet, and I've only found 1 picture of it in the internet. So far, only www.liliputing.com was able to come up with a picture of it...Here' show a 1366×768 looks like, just to satisfy your curiousity. :) From the looks of it, I guess a 1366x768 display on a 10.1" screen will just be for folks with really good vision. :)

I've recently tested running Slingbox over my HP Mini 2140 and it works flawlessly!

Now I can watch CNN, ESPN, NBC, ABC...anytime, and from virtually anywhere just as long as there's an internet connection.

Indeed, this is modern technology at its finest! --- My brother hooked up his Slingbox to his Tivo in California while I'm here in Manila, sitting on my bed, while capturing the latest live feeds direct from the US...as if i'm actually lounging on his living room sofa! Cool! :)

Verizon recently launched, not a new phone, but a new 3G HP Mini Notebook! It's a Mini Laptop with built in wireless broadband capability, increasing the overall mobility of the personal computing using 3G capabilities of Verizon.

It's available starting May 17 in the US costing US$199 after a $50 rebate including a 2 year contract with the service provider. This costs around US$429 if you get it from HP without the Verizon data Contract costing approx US$40/month.

The HP Mini 2150 Laptops Notebooks

I've heard a lot of write-ups about the HP Mini 2150. They say it's going to be 3G equipped, with a more powerful Atom processer like the N280. They also say that this will be th first Mini to have an 11.6" screen and will be relatively bigger than the conventioanl HP Mini (which will make it not a mini anymore, hehe).

It's already May 26, and up to this date, HP hasn't announced anything yet. Hopefully this coming June we'll be able to see a sneak peek of this new Mini. I just hope it will have the same finish as the 2140. :)

Until then, we can't do anything but wait...and see. No one is even sure that the model name will indeed be "2150". Who knows it could be an HP Mini 2240 or something. :)

Netbook Review: Lenovo Idea Pad S10 Limited Red Edition

Based on looks alone, the Red Version of the Lenovo S10 is a indeed a head turner! Who would have thought that this beauty came from a line of boring IBMs? :)

Unlike the HP Mini, the Lenovo Idea Pad comes in a variety of glossy colors: red, classic white, bold black, deep blue and pastel pink.

The outside finish is simply stunning while the white matte inside body and keyboard finish gives it a very neat appearance. The expansion slot is also a bonus surprise giving it an option for notebook gadgets. An SD slot, vga port, and a LAN slot also comes in standard.

Under the hood, the Red Lenovo Idea Pad S10 is packed with an N270 Atom Processor, 1gb of RAM, 160gb of HDD, and a 10.1" glossy TFT screen.

But wait, here's more: Starting January 2009, 3 cool features were added:
1) LenovoSocial :a preloaded portal on the S10, which makes it easier to connect to your friends on various social networks
2) Lenovo Quick Star: gets you to frequently used apps (browswer, media player, photos, IM, games, etc) faster without waiting for Windows to load.
3) Lenovo VeriFace technology: includes a facial recognition system for added security. Cool huh?! :)

Overall, the Lenovo is really a good deal for your money costing approx US$400 for a 3-cell battery version and US$440 for a 6-cell version.

Oh, and yes, my wife bought one for herself and I must say, it made my HP Mini 2140 somehow feel a bit insecure. :)

Apparently, Mini Laptops (aka Netbooks) have limited video capability, hence graphics-intensive games may not be a good idea on your HP Mini or any mini laptop for that matter. I haven't gone through any work arounds yet that would help optimize video performance however, I have the following tips:

a) Play Classic 90's Games!
This would be the likes of Diablo, Doom, LucasArts games and other games that you used to play under your old Pentium.

b) Play Online Java/Flash games!
Online games are always a good option when you're killing time so why not go to sites like Yahoo games, Facebook, and coffeebreakarcade.com.

c) Netbooks have Built In Webcams - Play webcam Games!
Try Googling for Web cam games or try this: http://www.extendedreality.com/webcam_games_info.html.

d) Play Emulators!
NES, SNES, and Genesis emulators work well with HP Minis and Netbooks! I just downloaded classic NES ROMs into my HP Mini 2140 and I've gained back my addiction to Punch-Out, Contra, and Double Dragon! You can just Google for the emulators! Don't ask me where to find the ROMs ;).

I guess this is the life-- having your netbook in a remote place with an internet connection! :) I am now seated at the waiting lounge of Big Bert's Araneta here in QC. It's a big lounge with Cable TV, great airconditioning, and a comfy sofa. No Wifi connection though so I just had my HP Mini connected through my Nokia phone. Cool huh?! :)

The HP Mini 2140 looks like deja vu for those who are familiar with the HP Mini 2133. At first glance it looks the same given the same sturdy look and silver finish of the netbook. However, if you look closer, you'll begin to see the differences between the HP Mini 2133 and its bigger brother, HP Mini 2140.

Most visible difference would be the default screen size -- The HP Mini 2133 has an option of a smaller 8.9" screen but with bigger side speakers. The HP Mini 2140 on the other hand seemed to have a smaller set of speakers at the bottom of the screen. Batteries are exactly the same so batteries for both laptops can be interchangeable.

Under the hood, the HP Mini 2133 has a VIA C7-M processor while the Mini 2140 has already an Intel Atom N270. I believe that's the biggest improvement in terms of performance.

My HP Mini 2140 houses the Intel Atom N270 processer. Yeah, we know it to be the best processing chip of mobile computers, but how well do we really know the Intel Atom. Here's what I got from Wikipedia:

Wish list accessories for my HP Mini 2140!

Since 6 days ago, I haven't bought anything for my HP Mini except for a 1GB RAM extension which I am very contented with, particularly on the added speed that it gives when I have multiple windows open).

I do have a wishlist in mind that hopefully I can buy soon here in Manila or maybe when I go and visit the US this September:

1) 6-cell battery extension (Approx $100) - This would give me a total of 6 hours of surfing time.
2) HP Mini Sleave (Good for all HP minis) - Well, this will keep my HP Mini protected since it's just lying on my table right now and I still don't have protective storage for it.
3) External 8x DVD writer (Approx $100) - not a priority since my wife has an external HP CD writer already that I can borrow. Though it would be great if I can also write and burn DVDs too! :)
4) A4 Wireless mouse - comes in handy when your fingers are a bit tired from clicking the 2 touchpad buttons at opposite ends :)

I've been using my Netbook for about a week now. So far so good! It has really been worth it! I've already downloaded a lot of emulator games, posted a lot of pictures, surfed countless hours, and downloaded music albums!

Here are my Top 5 recommended installations in your HP Mini:
a) VLC Media player - runs faster with less resources! Plays pretty much any video and music available.
b) Google Chrome - Gives more screen space for surfing. See more details in my previous post! :)
c) Fox it reader - uses less resources than Adobe PDF
d) Open Office instead of MS Office - Definitely more convenient and Faster!
e) Meebo - All in 1 IM software. Compatible with most IM softwares.

Now I'm officially a Google Chrome fan. In fact, I'm even typing this blog entry via Chrome. :) Why is this perfect for my HP Mini 2041?

1) No Menu Toolbars! Gives more space for browsing!
2) Speed! Faster than Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox
3) Has the security features and tab features of Firefox. :)

Meet my brand new HP Mini 2140

I just bought my brand new HP Mini 2140. :) Now I've never been more excited surfing the net from my bed, kitchen, bathroom, and of course wifi coffee shops. Got it for P23,995 (roughly $430) from Villman Computers in Robinson's Pioneer.

For me HP will always be HP in terms of reliability and was a hands down choice compared to the Asus EEE PC and Acer Aspire netbooks
